Rooted in History: The Heritage Trees That Define Great Park Neighborhoods
At Great Park Neighborhoods, life is different. Here, you won’t find gates or towering monuments marking your arrival — instead, the living landmarks of our community are the Heritage Trees. Their wide canopies, gnarled trunks, and decades of history make every street feel rooted, authentic, and familiar. These trees aren’t just landscaping; they’re reminders of the neighborhoods we grew up in, where shade stretched across sidewalks and the streets told stories.

Rooted in History
Our Heritage Trees first took root on the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in the 1940s. When the base closed, hundreds of mature trees — sycamores, ficus, oaks, pepper trees and more — could have been lost forever. Instead, they were carefully rescued, boxed, and nurtured in on-site nurseries. For years, arborists tended them like old friends, preparing them for a second life in the community.

Planted With Purpose
Once ready, these trees were replanted throughout Great Park Neighborhoods. Today, their sprawling branches define our parks, sidewalks, and gathering spaces. Their irregular, organic silhouettes stand apart from typical “engineered” landscaping. Each one has character, giving our neighborhoods a sense of permanence and warmth from day one — the feeling of a place that’s already been loved for generations.

A Living Difference
What truly makes Great Park Neighborhoods different? We don’t build gates or monuments to say “welcome.” The trees do. These living monuments create shade, beauty, and an instant sense of home. They knit together our neighborhoods, making them feel like the places we all remember — where kids ride bikes under mature canopies, neighbors gather in the shade, and every street feels alive with history.

Carrying the Legacy Forward
The story continues at The Canopy, the region’s new retail destination opening in late 2026. Once again, crews are relocating and planting towering ficus trees that inspired its name. Just like in our neighborhoods, these trees will provide natural gathering places for dining, shopping, and connecting with friends and family — proof that the legacy of Heritage Trees is central to everything we grow here.
